I think the coldness and disconnected feeling was most adesptly executed by Numan...the isolated, distant riffs he thought up for his band to play (and of course the ones he played himself) were the exact opposite of the raw, primal music being laid out at the time by bands like the mid-career Who, etc)...I think he set out to make music for isolated, lonely people, and listening to this in particular, I think he accomplished that beautifully...I mean just listen to that riff about 45 secs. in!
