this is the original version when it comes to the lyrics because it contains the last part that was edited out for airplay reasons in 1962; this recording however happened in 1995 for his direct-to-home video movie GET SERIOUS where he made 10 music videos, one of which is what you see here.
He recorded this song originally in 1962; Mercury edited out the last bit for airplay; then it was re-recorded in the mid '60s on Ralph Emery's show; then it was re-recorded in 1969 for the GITARZAN album.

No, the original didn't have the audience laughter on it and it went the same way you hear it in this music video. The full-length original can be found on several compilation CD's depending on the label. Mercury and their affiliates often highlight the original un-cut version.
The 1969 version with the audience laughter and Lucky Strike cigarette auction caller catch-phrase, "sold to American", upon the conclusion of Ahab's shouts at Clyde, is the version I was raised listening to.

this was recorded in 1995 for his movie GET SERIOUS. i do not think the movie is for sale anymore officially but it can be found at auction sites on-line. Jerry Clower, Johnny Russell, Chet Atkins, George Lindsay, James Gregory, Williams and Ree, and Charlie Chase all make appearances; Their appearances were brief cameo roles with the exception of Jerry Clower, who appeared more frequently; Ray's songwriting partner, Buddy Kalb, was the co-star as was stage actress, Connie Freeman.

no offense but he isn't "making fun of Arabs"...the song is about an Arab character who rides a camel named Clyde and is in love with a woman named Fatima who's a member of the Sultan's harem; so what we have here is an Arab who's seeing one of the Sultan's women on the side. the song's plot could be played out inside a bar if you look at the basics: two men vying for the same woman. so I've never taken it as making fun of Arab's...it's more or less using Arabian imagery to tell a comedy story.

yeah well thats how you take it...i take it as it's makin fun of the damn towel heads...take it however you want...if it was meant to be played out in a bar then the song would have been called "2 men fightin over a hoe in a bar" but it's not.

oh okay...I jumped to conclusions. I thought you were part of the population that says he's making fun of Arab's intentionally, which he isn't, it just seems that way because of that dreaded political correctness that hangs around like a thick layer of smog, where people take innocent comedy songs and mistake them for malicious attacks. i didn't say it was meant to be played out in a bar. i was saying you could apply the scenario in a bar but people get hung-up over the fact he chose Arabians.
