Someone may have posted this before, but I think the reason that maestro Abbado looks so amused at times (besides the fact that he must love his job) is that point where everyone starts opening umbrellas (at 3:10) comes during the section of the overture (starting at 2:40) which depicts a thunderstorm.

He's the conductor. His job is to make sure everyone is in harmony. During rehearsals he's the one who works on making sure everyone is in sync with everyone else. He's not clowning around. Without him nobody could harmonize themselves so perfectly.
